"People
who need counselling are desperate"
Some people who seek counselling may indeed be desperate for help,
but counselling need not be considered a last resort, only for the
emotionally desperate. Instead, it is an opportunity to increase awareness
about the issues related to specific concerns that are causing worry
and/or frustration. Early counselling intervention can prevent the
problems getting out of hand.
"I can solve my problems on
my own"
Many people are fortunate enough to go through life without the need
of a counsellor. Strong social support systems in the family or amongst
friends can make a difference. Being satisfied in one's work, living
and physical conditions make it easier to cope when things go wrong.
On the other hand, when problems arise, it is good to know that it
is possible to seek assistance from an objective listener - a professional
who will hear you out, in confidence, and help you to determine your
options.
"I know someone who went to counselling
and didn't feel any better"
Counsellors cannot offer a guarantee that problems
will go away. Those who expect quick, easy solutions to complex problems
are often disappointed. A trained counsellor will help to assess problems,
can offer strategies towards solutions and can recommend further help
when it is needed. This said, a counsellor cannot force clients to
take the actions they recommend - clients need to accept responsibility
for their own efforts. "I don't want to deal with it today. I'm sure
things will be better tomorrow." |

"I
don't want to deal with it today. I'm sure things will be better
tomorrow."
Deciding to make contact with a counsellor can
seem an additional stress factor in an already difficult situation
that may be painful to think and talk about. It seems easier to wait
and hope that the problem goes away. Too often, people carry around
the weight of their problems for months, or even years, before they
take action to solve the problems that have been worrying them to
distraction. Yet, once they act, they find they can stop being victims
and can begin to take some control over their situations..
"I don't want anybody probing
my mind"
Psychoanalysis and psychiatric treatment are not what counselling
is about. The counsellor's primary objectives are to identify and
evaluate the problem; to determine related issues and to help clients
understand their options and work towards achieving the goals that
the client sets. Throughout the process, you, the client, remain in
control! So, don't let myths and misconceptions about counselling
keep you from getting the help you may need to move forward toward
a happier, more successful life.
